Spinning

April 14, 2009

I was very kindly given a spinning wheel by a friend of mine last year, and this weekend I finally managed to take it out for a spin, so to speak. It was a little tricky at first to get the hang of the pedaling and drafting the wool but I found this video very helpful to get me started.

This is the result! It is a combination of merino and Icelandic wool, slightly over spun in some places and under spun in others but I am quite pleased with it.

Spinning: My first attempt on the wheel

Be sure to keep it! You will always cherish your very first yarn, trust me. Congratulations on embarking on a wonderful fiber adventure.

I think you persevere just fine. (Bad english I’m sure.)I am always delighted when you post a new pic of one of your embroidered felts. I am just learning how much forethought and perseverance felt takes.

Congratulations!!! It looks great. It’s very therapeutic isn’t it, both the carding and the spinning.

Fulvia, That is a good idea – I will try and put it somewhere safe. Thank you Jackie for your encouragement! I’ll have a bit more time on my hands soon and will be doing lots of work over the summer and I can’t wait. :-)
Sal and David – Thanks so much for the spinning wheel – am just about to make my next skein of yarn. It will be a good way of using up all of the smaller tufts of fibres too. Might be a while before I make Roo a jumper though!

Over-spun or under-spun, it is just gorgeous. Wish it were mine.
